The Bees by Laline Paull, is without a doubt the most unusual book I have read. Flora 717 is a sanitation worker, born to the lowest class of the hive. She’s born large and hideous and nothing like the other Floras. Not only is she different in size, but she can speak, the only Flora able to do so. The Bees follows Flora 717 throughout her life in the hive as she struggles with (and against) the social hierarchy and religion of the hive. Shortly, Flora 717 discovers that she has an ability that can upset the carefully controlled hierarchy and she finds herself jeopardizing her position in the hive. While a very unusual read, the concept and writing make it a complete page turner!
