Orange World is the latest short story collection from the masterful Karen Russell. One of my favorite writers of all time, Russell is known for her ability to craft incredibly rich short stories as well as her novel Swamplandia! which was nominated for a Pulitzer.
In the beautiful stories found in Orange World, a woman travels with her new husband to see the Joshua trees and has an unusual experience. A teenage boy falls in love with a woman who has been dead for centuries. Two young women attend a party planning to rob the hosts only to find more than they had bargained for. All of these scenarios could come off as unrealistic, but Russell’s writing makes the reader believe. Any fan of magical realism and good writing should spend some time with this book.
