This is a historical fiction novel about the French composer Erik Satie and his two siblings, Louise and Conrad. Horrocks takes an interesting approach in making the siblings’ stories very primary to the plot, especially Louise’s, and it really works. Rather than just a portrait of a “great man”, this book explores the complex dynamics between the siblings as their relationships evolve throughout the years. Louise’s story is very compelling as an illustration of the limitations imposed on women in the early twentieth century. Erik’s flaws are exposed, including his obsessive focus on his music and career at the expense of human relationships. This is an excellent, well crafted historical novel.
