The Portrait of a Mirror is a modern day take on the myth of Narcissus set in modern day NYC and Philadelphia.
Wes and Diana and Dale and Vivien are enviable couples, but not very happy with each other. When their paths cross, they begin to wonder what could have been if they had made different choices. This book has a very overdone, intentionally pretentious style. It would be overwhelming if not for the text messages and phone calls that break up the text and give the reader a different perspective on the characters’ relationships. This book is an interesting mix of rom com, satire, and philosophical musings with a humorous twist. In places I found it extremely funny–especially the couples’ mutual friend who has an L.L. Bean tote bag for every occasion. Definitely an interesting read!
