The Paper Palace is a debut novel set in the Back Woods, which is “a stand-in for Wellfleet, Mass.” according to The LA Times. Elle has stayed at her family’s camp in the Back Woods every summer. When she was young, she strikes up a friendship with a boy named Jonas. This book is set in present day, when Elle is married with three children. Although she married an English man named Peter, there is still a strong connection with Jonas and she is torn between two worlds. This book captures New England summer days and illustrates the nuance of family history and how the past can shape someone’s present. Warning: This book deals with sexual abuse and does include graphic scenes.
