Woodcut image of library buildingIn the fall of 1992, work began to create a genealogy collection that would serve the needs of folks researching their Hancock County family history. On July 27, 1992, The Alvin S. Whitmore Memorial Collection for Genealogical Research officially opened in a corner of the main floor. Named for a former trustee of the library and funded by a memorial fund started by his family at his death, the collection has continued to grow with generous donations. The collection soon outgrew the main level and in August 2005 the collection found a new home on the third floor southeast balcony.

The inclusion of the Hancock County Genealogical Society Papers and gifts of several private collections has enabled us to expand the focus to most of Maine, New England, Atlantic Canada and other parts of the United States. With print, microform and digital resources there is something for everyone. We welcome relevant gifts of published or unpublished genealogies to be included in the collection.

Time and staff limitations prevent us from doing extensive genealogical research, however we are happy to do quick look-ups for obituaries or specific family information. We accept requests by mail, telephone or email through our website. Please include as much information as possible.
